I’ve got a new computer

Happy AnniversaryYep, I picked up a MacBook tonight.  Cynthia & I headed up McKinney Ave to the Apple Store on Knox.  As we approached it, we saw a line of people down the block, waiting to get in.  Yep, it was iPhone 2.0 release day.  We figured that we might have better luck at the Apple Store in Northpark Mall, since parking would be easier and it was inside.  We saw the line in the hall, and asked if we had to wait to be able to purchase something other than an iPhone.  They asked what we wanted, and we told them a MacBook.  They said we’d have to wait in line.  So we left.

I called the Knox store to see if they’d make me wait, too.  Yep, same deal.  They said the line might be shorter the next day, but if there still was a line, we’d still have to wait.  So I called Best Buy to make sure they had the computer I wanted.  They said they had 16, so we headed over there.  We stood around for about 15 minutes with no one even acknowledging our presence before we gave up and decided to go to MicroCenter instead.

We’d picked up an Eee PC for Cynthia there a couple weeks ago, and the Mac guy was really helpful, so we figured we could get a Mac from him.  He got it for us, and helped us pick out some other items, and we went up to pay for it.  Unfortunately, the purchase amount was over our daily limit for our debit cards.  We ended up having to split the purchase between two cards, but we got it done.  The cashier was very patient.

So I’ve spent the last hour or so getting it set up the way I like it.  I’ve downloaded Firefox 3.0 and customized it a bit.  Now I need to get a better background image for the wallpaper.

Happy Anniversary!

Happy AnniversarySix years ago today, I got married.

I just looked up gifts for the 6th wedding anniversary.  The traditional gifts are candy or iron.  The Modern gift is wood.

It’s good to know you’re valuable

Earlier this week I was talking with the Small Docs manager at our SuperStore up the street about different open positions in the company, and he asked why I didn’t apply for the open Docutech Operator position he had. I told him that I love what I do and where I do it, and that getting my boss to approve my transfer from this location to his would be like trying to pull teeth from a rabid badger. I figured that was the end of it and didn’t think about it any more.

Well, I just got off the phone with him. He told me that he decided he wanted me for that position, so instead of trying to convince my boss to let me transfer, he’d go over her head. Yeah, that didn’t work. He got laughed at. He was told that I was her pet, and that pulling me from the Nameless Merchant would essentially kill the contract with them. Since they do over $1M per year, losing the contract would be a bad thing.

Strange Text Message - The Final Chapter

Sony Ericsson w810i Apologies for taking so long to wrap up this story. To refresh your memory, I participated in a bizarre text message conversation a while back. The gist of it is that the texter thought I was someone else, bought a large bottle of Grey Goose for me, and expected me to come over that night to drink & hang out. We’d gone back & forth with plans for the evening, each reply getting more and more bizarre. Of course, I didn’t show.

Here’s the conversation from the next day:

Mystery Texter: Hope u did well on the test today

Test? Apparently, the Mystery Texter thinks I’m a student.

me: Aced it. Had a great time last night. Sure was a wild one, wasn’t it?

MT: Sadly all we did was go to bed. Looking forward to tonight.

MT: Still coming over tonight?

me: Wait a minute. If I wasn’t at your place last night, where was I?

MT: Good question. Ur coming over tonight to get naked. Why hd a wild night last night?

me: Thought it was with you. Maybe we’re confused. I came over, drank a bunch of grey goose, and the rest is a haze. You’re telling me I didn’t come over?

MT: Sadly yes. We still have ur bottle here. U never came over. Did u dream it? lol

me: No, I’m hung over. I’m sure it happened.

MT: Didnt come to our place. R u tonight? R u at work?

MT: So r u coming over tonight to have fun?

me: Going to a concert tonight, so I can’t come over.

I really was going to a concert that night. One of the few true things I texted.

MT: That sucks. Would u like me to drop off the grey goose at ur place?

me: Sure.

MT: R u at ur place?

me: Yes.

I wasn’t home, I was at work.

MT: Be there in a bit.

me: See ya soon.

MT: Whats ur apt number?

me: 729

Just a number I made up.

MT: Sorry im lost

Of course s/he was.

MT: Where do u work again?

Not gonna tell ya that, I don’t want any retaliation. Maybe I can turn this around and put it on them.

me: Are you sure you’re texting the right person, and not simply fucking with me?

MT: Who is this? Cause i got the wrong person I think.

MT: Is this Lauren?

me: No.

MT: My Bad. I’m a idiot. Sorry to bother u and have a good one

Damn, I was having fun. Maybe I can get them to play some more.

me: Well, if I didn’t get drunk with you last night, who was I with?

MT: Good Question. I dont even know u

Apparently not.

Went for a bike ride this morning

There’s a group ride on June 8 that I want to do. The route is set at about 35 miles. I’ll have to take the train to Plano, then ride to the starting point 7.5 miles away. So I’ll end up getting in about 50 miles. While I’m sure I could ride 50 miles, it would be slow going. Since I don’t want to suck down the rest of the group’s enjoyment of the ride, I figure I should get in some miles before then. So I got up early this morning and went for a ride before work.

I live in Downtown Dallas, so I have to get out of Downtown to a safe area to ride. For the past few years, I’ve been riding East of Downtown to Fair Park, where I found a 1-mile loop that I can do laps on. Since it’s in Fair Park, the only traffic is Parks department and Police. Except that there’s some sort of construction going on in the middle of the loop, so I couldn’t ride there today. So I ended up riding on side streets back through East Dallas and into Downtown. I got in just under 8.5 miles at an average of just over 12mph.

I’ll have to do some map research and find another good route. I could always ride down to the Katy Trail, except that with the joggers and walkers I can’t get a good pace going. I think there’s a good route to get to White Rock Lake. I could then do a lap or two around it, depending on when I need to get back to get to work.

I got a new wallet

Fossil WalletAt lunch today, my wallet fell out of my pants and into the toilet. I was able to rescue it and salvage the few items I had in it. I’d recently switched from a tri-fold wallet to a business card wallet, so there’s not much room in it for stuff. Since I was now without a wallet, I suggested to Cynthia that we go to dinner at NorthPark so I could get a new one.

After dinner, we went to the Fossil store and I purchased one. It has a magnetic money clip. I’ve never used a money clip before, so I’ll see how it works out. I don’t usually carry much cash, so I don’t think it’ll be that big of a deal. Now I just have to condense my discount cards down to one to save room.

I am not a Weekend Warrior

SS MTBThis has been eating away at me for a few days now. Sunday night, while riding with Matt, he informed me that someone in our riding group (I’ll call her KK) referred to me as a Weekend Warrior. Matt got my back and set the person straight. It still pisses me off, though. My interpretation of “Weekend Warrior” is the almost the same as Wikipedia’s first definition:

People who do recreational activities (such as skiing, snowboarding, or mountain biking) solely on the weekends since they work Monday through Friday and may or may not be local to the area of these activities.

I don’t solely ride on the weekends. Granted, the vast majority of my riding is done on the weekend, but I do ride during the week.

When I think of a Weekend Warrior, I also think of a middle-aged man trying to reclaim his youth. Usually he’ll have gotten interested in an activity and will have gone out and purchased all kinds of brand-new, top of the line equipment in pursuit of the activity. While I may be at the beginnings of being middle-aged, I have no need to reclaim my youth, as I’ve never lost it.

Since I’ve known KK, I’ve added one bike to my stable: a new old stock, 1995-vintage MTB frame that I built up using parts I had, as well as parts that I got deals on.

As far as I know, KK has been riding for approximately 2 years, possibly 3. I’ve been riding since I moved to Dallas in 1989. And I’m not even counting my childhood/HS years. So for over half my life, I’ve been riding.

I have 5 bikes in my stable. I’ve owned one of them since 1989. Other than the newest bike, the most recent acquisition was in 1995 or 1996, so I went over a decade between bike purchases.

Just because she doesn’t see me ride during the week, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. I haven’t seen her ride on the weekend in quite a while. Is that because her schedule only permits her to ride during the week? I used to have a job that was like that: my weekend was shifted to Tuesday & Wednesday. Had I only gone for rides on those two days, I’d have been a Weekend Warrior. If she’s only going for rides on her days off, she, too, would be a Weekend Warrior.

Besides all of the above, does it really matter when we ride? To me, the most important aspect is the fact that we are actually out there riding, not when we’re doing it.

I don’t show up for every single ride that’s planned. Neither does anyone else, including her.

So she can shove her “Weekend Warrior” comment. I’ve never done anything to cause her to make a judgment about me or my activities, and I’ve never judged hers.

Who died and made her the Goddess of Cycling Legitimacy?
